    The Transportation Department of the North Central Texas Council of Governments is seeking a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) summer Intern to support GIS and data analysis activities on the GIS and Data Solutions team. The successful candidate will use basic GIS and data manipulation/analysis skills to support a variety of activities within the department. Continuing employment opportunities may be available for Interns who are successful in this position.     Ideal candidates must be able to work at least 25 hours a week within the State of Texas, preferably within the Dallas-Fort Worth region, between mid-May and mid-August 2022. 

    Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

    • Editing and maintaining GIS datasets
    • Creating maps and other cartographic products
    • Assisting with manipulation and interpretation of large observed datasets and forecasts
    • Assisting with the creation and maintenance of web mapping products in ArcGIS Online and other platforms
    • Responding to technical assistance and data requests
    • Participating in plan development processes and discussions

    Required Skills

    • Basic knowledge of GIS principles and the ESRI ArcGIS platform, including map production, manipulation of GIS datasets, spatial analysis, and interactive online mapping applications
    • Introductory knowledge of common programming/scripting languages used in data analysis, including Python, Pandas, SQL, and others preferred
    • Ability to manipulate and analyze large datasets using a variety of analysis tools, including but not limited to, ArcGIS
    • Knowledge of basic principles of cartography
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Access, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams
    • Detail oriented, organized, and ability to handle multiple tasks and tight deadlines
    • Strong verbal and written communication skills and interpersonal skills
    • Must be able to work independently and in a team environment

    Required Experience

    • Must be enrolled in an accredited college or university during employment. Pursuit of a degree in a related field desired.
    • No work experience required, at least one year of school-related experience preferred.


    Minimum of $15.00 per hour

Since 1974, the North Central Texas Council of Governments has served as the Metropolitan Planning Organization for transportation in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metropolitan Area and is responsible for developing transportation plans and programs that address the complex needs of the rapidly growing area. The planning area for transportation includes the 12 counties of Collin, Dallas, Denton, Ellis, Hood, Hunt, Johnson, Kaufman, Parker, Rockwall, Tarrant, and Wise.
