Lessons Learned Developing a UAS Program for Local Government
Presentation Outline:
Recognizing the potential of UAS technologies, the City of Mesquite GIS Division, under the direction of the Public Works Department, acquired a drone in February 2017. Since then, over 28 flying hours have been logged on the drone, and 20 unique projects have been completed that utilized either drone footage or UAS derived data products. Developing a UAS program was not without challenge: navigating the licenses, laws, technology, and software can present significant barriers to the success of a drone operation. In his talk, Mark will outline some of the major challenges he came across, and give his tips to overcome them.
About the Speaker:
Mark Buie is the GIS Coordinator for the City of Mesquite. His interest in Unmanned Aerial Systems (UASs) and GIS began with his career in archaeology, which took him to Scotland where he gained his Master's in GIS and Archaeology at the University of Edinburgh. This degree marked his career change to GIS, starting with teaching and UAS research for the University of Edinburgh and then onto the City of Mesquite where he has worked since 2016. Mark brought his passion for UAS technologies to the City by implementing the City’s UAS program, which has reduced expenditures on City projects and streamlined policy-making.
